Dyspareunia: Medical Condition That Causes Pain during Sex in Women

A couple of pelvic conditions in women can cause panful sex during sex, and consequently compromise sexual satisfaction. For example, vaginal dryness is caused by less stimulation, but it is a common instance. Also, there are other disorders such as perimenopause, hormone imbalances, and drugs may make sex extremely painful. On the other hand, vaginal dryness can prevent sexual arousal and bring about discomfort. Also, obstructions and anatomical changes, ovarian cyst, surgical scars, endometriosis, and pelvic mass are other factors that cause painful sex. Other diseases such as herpes, genital warts, syphilis, Gonorrhea, and chlamydia are sexually transmitted diseases that are contagious and can affect your sexual life. They cause significant changes in a woman’s genital and discomfort.


Pain in the labial, vaginal or pelvic region during or after sex is a matter that needs to be addressed. The name for this condition is known as dyspareunia. Many women have suffered from this condition for thousands of years. Today, most of the cases of the disease can be treated easily. For women with this condition, they tend to feel pain when they have sex for the first time. However, symptoms to differ from one person to the other and that’s why a patient needs to visit a doctor as soon as they notice the symptoms. Studies have shown that women who have a couple of sex episodes, less than a half of the cases report to the doctors.

Painful sex or painful intercourse can be experienced as vaginal pain, pelvic pain, or pain in the vulvar or labial during a sexual encounter. The pain may arise as a sharp pain, deep pain or a burning sensation. Painful sex is one of the causes of sexual dysfunction. The prevalence of the pain appears to increase with time.
